Artists submitting work online often use the terms open call and gallery submission interchangeably. They are not the same thing. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right opportunity for where you are in your practice, and approach each one with the right expectations. What is an open call? Knowing how to photograph your artwork properly is one of the most practical skills you can develop as an artist submitting to open calls. Most artists know Marea Gallery through our themed open calls: one piece per artist, selected by the curator, featured in a group exhibition. That format works well for what it is. But it is not the only way to get featured on Marea Gallery, and for some artists, it is not the most suitable one….
